John Ostergard Scholarship
Our Past President and Conference Coordinator Battalion Chief John Ostergard was a Volunteer at East Olympia Fire District 6. John was a trainer for the fire service for years and believed that training is the heart and soul of good firefighters. Battalion Chief Ostergard lost his life in a Line of Duty Death while on command duty at a fire in his district in 2019. This scholarship is designed to carry on John’s desire to provide quality training to the fire service. It is a scholarship that provides conference registration and housing for one person selected from the applications received by the WSFFA with a maximum value of $700. This scholarship must be requested by a member department for an individual member of that department. The individual is not required but is encouraged be an Individual Member of WSFFA, but the requesting fire department MUST BE a current member of WSFFA.
Applications are due 45 days prior to conference and notification will be made 30 days prior to conference. An applicant that is an individual member and their department is a member will be given a higher consideration. Award of the scholarship will be based on the requesting individuals department’s total departmental budget and their WSFFA dues amount. Should there be more than two member departments requesting this scholarship, a review committee will give priority to those departments who have at least one paid registration and who have been current with their WSFFA dues for three previous years.
Ron Roy Scholarship
Chief Roy volunteered for 50 years in the Wenatchee Valley, starting in 1973. He was a member of Chelan County Fire District 1, Douglas County Fire District 2 (East Wenatchee), and eventually, Wenatchee Valley Fire Department. Chief Ron Roy was a tireless advocate for the fire service, volunteering, and the safety of firefighters. Chief Roy dedication to the fire service and its members was also seen through his participation with the Washington State Fire Fighters Association. In 2004, his passion for the fire service and the individuals who give their lives daily took him to the National Volunteer Council, where he continued to advocate for Volunteer Firefighters. Chief Roy had planned to retire at the end of 2023. In addition to his work in the fire service, Chief Roy retired in 2019 as a senior electrical system operator with Chelan County Public Utility District in Wenatchee. Chief Roy lost his life in a Line of Duty Death from a presumptive cancer 2023. This scholarship is designed to carry on Ron’s desire to provide quality training to the fire service.
