Washington State Firefighters’ Association Bill Status & Upcoming Events Report February 9, 2020

Washington State Firefighters' Association Bill Status & Upcoming Events Report

February 9, 2020

The forth week is in the books with a flurry of action given policy cutoff was Saturday.  Unfortunately not the desired outcome wanted.  Wasn’t without Tammie’s efforts of pushing the pension bill through with messages and contact with specific legislators on both sides of the isles.  One complication we face with companion bills ( in both the House and Senate which is what is a preferred strategy) is that bill sponsors, and leadership tend to look at the journey, pick the bill and what they believe is a best route to take.  Given the stall 2019 we still* remain confidence movement is on the horizon.

Priority Legislation Update-ESB 5829/SHB 1912 Volunteer FF Pension Contributions

ESB 5829 is in queue for floor action; the floor striker is has been prepared by the Code Reviser & is ready for the Senator’s offering on the floor.  The next Rules meeting is 2/11, we’re anticipating the bill to move during the upcoming week.  The House bill is currently in Approps awaiting a public hearing on/or before the fiscal deadline of February 10.  Representative Joe Schmick (R-9) has graciously agreed to offer the committee amendment which updates the effective dates & will mirror the Senate bill.

Heading into Week #5- Fiscal Deadline & Floor Action

As reported last week, the deadline for policy bills occurred Friday, 2/7 followed by the upcoming fiscal deadline on 2/10 and 2/11.  House Approps is meeting over the weekend to clear bills out of committee in time for Monday’s deadline. The Senate is running a marathon on 2/11.  We will wait to see where the dust settles after the fiscal deadline & floor action commences.

To date, here’s the status-keeping in mind, fiscal bills are still “in-play” until the upcoming deadline.
