The Washington Fire Commissioners Association has committed a wealth of energies in addressing this issue. The following WFCA [SNURE LAW OFFICE, PSC a Professional Service Corporation] memorandum provides an overview of the appropriate method for managing and reporting volunteer compensation (expense reimbursements) for fire protection districts and regional fire authorities collectively referred to as “fire departments ”.Payments to volunteer firefighters must be analyzed under two separate and somewhat contradictory legal frameworks. While the WSFFA will not provide legal interpretation and direction the WSFFA will provide the volunteer information that serves to inform the volunteer. All volunteers are encouraged to read the document in its entirety and seek further information through your own fire authority.
